Over the holidays we were able to launch our new and improved Ethereum Name Service (ENS) wizard for linking your plain ole internet domain names to an Ethereum address
Most people by now are probably used to seeing .eth domains in the wild, in Twitter profiles, etc. But the .eth namespace is not (yet) visible over the legacy internet. It is if you have a Web3 enabled device, like a Metamask plugin for your browser, but otherwise you can’t type easydns.eth into a web browser location bar and have anything of note happen.
What is less known is that starting back in 2018 with the .XYZ registry, you could link .xyz domains to ENS.
Now, after the ENS WG (recently converted into the ENS DAO) deployed smart contracts to cover most IANA TLDs, it is now possible to link even .COM, .NET or other new gTLDs to an Ethereum address via ENS.
Simply manage your domain and go to the integrations section:
Then you should get the ENS Wizard:
One of things that has changed is that we used to eat the gas costs on these. Alas, given the current price in gas , we’ve had to push that onto you, sorry.
Right now the gas is now more significant than the domain (which we think will calm down over time as more applications move to Layer 2), but for the moment, you may want to check periodically and during off-hours to see when there is an opportune time to launch this.
Requirements:
- Linking to ENS requires that your domain be DNSSEC enabled, so if you haven’t already done that, the wizard will take care of it. That also means:
- easyDNS has to be your registrar, and
- We also have to be your nameservers.
That’s because of the way our easyDNSSEC™ Set-and-Forget DNSSEC™ is implemented (and that was the result of a lot of support headaches from the previous implementation of DNSSEC).
If you really want to use your own nameservers and do this, you can still do so, you’re just looking at manually executing each step of the ENS linking process, where our wizard does it for you.
The new-and-improved ENS linking is currently available for the following TLDs:
MAINNET: army, art, capital, cash, cc, co, com, finance, financial, fun,
glass, gold, net, network, org, rocks, tech, us, wtf, xyz
ROPSTEN: art, cloud, co, com, digital, domains, fyi, live, money, net,
network, org, watch, xyz
If there’s a TLD for which you want to link a domain that isn’t here, let us know via support and we’ll see if it can be added.
