We have received an alert from CIRA (who oversees the .CA namespace) that a boiler room is calling people using the CIRA name with the objective of gaining remote access to the recipient’s computer:
Dear Registrars,
CIRA would like to notify all Registrars of a recent phone call security scam using the CIRA name that was brought to our attention by several .CA domain holders.
In this particular scam, a caller, claiming to be associated with CIRA, asks for information about the user’s computer. The caller then guides the user through a process that ultimately provides the scammer remote access to user’s computer and the information located on its hard drive.
In addition to this advisory we are placing a notice on CIRA’s corporate website that notifies visitors of the scam and advises them to report these phone calls to the Canadian Anti-fraud Centre [link to http://www.antifraudcentre-centreantifraude.ca/english/reportit_howtoreportfraud.html].
CIRA will continue to track this scam and keep you updated on any developments.
Please be careful out there, when in doubt, never agree to anything, never offer any information and refer all inquiries to a trusted source (like us 🙂
